Businesses that Support Veterans

The businesses in this category have dedicated a significant portion of their work to ensure that veterans, military service members, and their families have a number of diverse resources and opportunities available to them. These companies recognize the challenges that veterans face during the transition into civilian life, and as such, have created impactful and purposeful programs that provide a benefit to the veteran community. The individuals selected for this category are those that led the charge for these companies in 2019, promoting veteran-specific initiatives that aim to highlight the skills, leadership, and experiences of the veteran community.

Mark McManus, United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada (UA)

The UA Veterans in Piping (VIP) Program equips separating military service members with valuable technical skills in the pipe trade, an increasingly sought after skill-set. Through an 18-week accelerated courses – provided free of cost on military bases across the country – VIP participants earn industry-recognized certifications and a direct entry into solid private-sector jobs with good pay and benefits. The UA VIP Program was created to jointly address veteran unemployment and a growing shortage of skilled workers in the construction industry, creating a valuable pipeline for veterans seeking meaningful careers. With praise from Congress, the U.S. Department of Labor, the military, and media, the UA VIP Program is recognized as one of the best active-duty military transition programs in the country.

The United Association’s chief officer is General President Mark McManus. In August 2016, Mark McManus was unanimously elected as General President at the UA’s 39th General Convention and on November 10, 2016, he assumed his new position leading the nation’s most progressive and influential trade union.

Travis Dalton, Cerner

Travis Dalton is currently President and General Manager of Cerner Government Services (CGS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Cerner Corporation. As President, Travis focuses on bringing the best of Cerner to deliver greater value, innovation and outcomes for Cerner’s federal clients. He leads all aspects of CGS, including strategy, operations, delivery and growth. Under Travis’ leadership, CGS has experienced significant year-over-year growth and is transforming healthcare delivery through its integral role on two of the government’s largest, most complex modernization programs to date – Department of Defense’s Defense (DoD) Healthcare Management Systems Modernization (DHMSM) program and Veterans Affairs’ (VA) Electronic Health Record Modernization (EHRM) program. Through these efforts, Cerner is improving care quality for military Service members and creating a single electronic health record that will make seamless care possible for the nation’s 20 million Service members, Veterans and their beneficiaries.

In addition to his relentless mission focus, Travis is strongly committed to developing next-generation IT leaders and building environments where they can thrive. He invests significant personal time in continuous coaching and mentoring individuals at all levels to achieve their full potential; and has created an entrepreneurial culture at CGS to spur creativity across the team. Travis is currently a member of the Military Committee of the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and the Host Committee for the Elizabeth Dole Hidden Heroes Foundation.

Jason Wright, JP Morgan Chase

Jason Wright is a Vice President in the Office of Military and Veterans Affairs at JPMorgan Chase & Co. Jason oversees the Veteran Jobs Mission, a coalition of more than 200 companies committing to hiring, retaining and developing veteran employees. In this role, he also manages the firm’s relationships across the private and nonprofit sectors, government and higher education on issues of veteran employment and workforce development. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Jason served as an infantry officer, completing deployments as a platoon leader, executive officer and supporting operations. He continues to serve as a military intelligence officer in the Army Reserves. He holds a Masters of Business Administration from Columbia Business School and a Bachelor’s degree from Florida International.

Brian Moran, GovernmentCIO

To transform the way services and support are provided to our Nation’s heroes and their families, GovernmentCIO LLC (GCIO) has partnered with various Veteran Service Organizations to create our Veterans Initiatives Team (VIT). GCIO’s VIT team, composed completely of Veterans, will tackle pressing issues and challenges facing Veterans. GCIO is actively recruiting Veterans to serve as on-call employees on the VIT. Activities VIT members will support include: occasional testing of Veteran-facing applications developed by GCIO; analysis of prospective legislation and policy changes to identify impacts to the Veteran community; and identification of Veteran support services/ areas upon which GCIO can help implement improvements, using firsthand experiences to help develop solutions for those improvements. 

Brian Moran is the CEO of GCIO and the country’s leading strategist in government IT. As a former federal IT executive, writer, respected thought leader and commentator, Moran is often quoted in government technology periodicals and frequently serves as the featured speaker at government IT conferences and workshops. Beyond his duties at GovernmentCIO, Moran continues to serve the public by way of his leadership in government-industry advisory panels, active participation in several industry associations, and leadership in promoting improved IT through higher education.
