Businesses that Support Veterans

The businesses in this category have dedicated a significant portion of their work to ensure that veterans, military service members, and their families have a number of diverse resources and opportunities available to them. These companies recognize the challenges that veterans face during the transition into civilian life, and as such, have created impactful and purposeful programs that provide a benefit to the veteran community. The individuals selected for this category are those that led the charge for these companies in 2018, promoting veteran-specific initiatives that aim to highlight the skills, leadership, and experiences of the veteran community.

Greg Parsons, Semper Capital Management

Greg joined Semper Capital Management in 2008 as the Chief Operating Officer and in 2010 became the firm’s Chief Executive Officer. In addition to leading Semper Capital, Greg serves as Chairman of the Investment Committee and the Risk Management Committee and is a member of the Compliance Committee. Prior to joining Semper Capital, Greg served as Founding and Managing Member of CP Capital Partners, LP. Greg previously served as an Associate Principal at McKinsey & Company in the Financial Services Group. Greg began his career over 19 years ago and served as a Captain and Infantry Officer in the United States Marine Corps. Greg earned an AB from Princeton University.

Semper Capital Management partnered with the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation to create The Semper Capital Management Scholarship program, which will award scholarships to 10 at-need children of Navy and Marine corpsmen over the year. Each student who receives a scholarship will also be paired with a Semper employee to build a mentorship connection and reinforce the relationship between Semper Capital and the scholarship foundation.

Semper Capital has two veterans on its five-member board and two veterans among its five owners. The firm also has joined up with other veteran groups.


Scott Lietzow, Military and Veteran Hiring Program, Allstate Insurance

After serving as Congressman Bob Dold’s Veterans Outreach Coordinator, Scott transitioned to Allstate’s Military and Veteran Hiring Program at the early stages of the program. Scott took charge of building and strengthening Allstate’s efforts to hire Veterans and to educate their workforce on the skills and values veterans bring to the organization. A major part of this effort was creating and delivering a training program to Allstate recruiters on how to read and translate veterans’ resumes into like-activities in the insurance world and culture.

As a result, Allstate placed over 400 veterans into a sales role in 2018, as well as 300 veterans into corporate roles. These results were recognized by, as they named Allstate the #2 Military Friendly Employer for 2018. Scott is a Marine Corps veteran.


Gordon Logan, CEO, Sport Clips

Before he founded Sport Clips Haircuts in 1993, Gordon Logan served as an Aircraft Commander in the U.S. Air Force, and giving back to our nation’s heroes has always been important to him. His company currently has 45 veteran franchise owners and offers a 20% discount to veterans looking to join the brand. In addition to being a past president and current member of the VetFran Committee, he also serves on the VFW Foundation board and on the advisory board for USO Fort Hood. The VFW’s Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship program has provided some 1,300 scholarships totaling $5.5 million to service men and women and veterans pursuing their education and training goals. The company is also a national sponsor of the Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation, which provides dream flights in Boeing Stearman biplanes for seniors and veterans living in long-term care facilities and has given more than 3,500 dream flights. Gordon’s Sport Clips also sponsors the Aleethia Foundation, Gratitude Initiative, Honor Flight Austin, and R.O.C.K veteran program. Gordon has made support for veterans central to his personal, professional and philanthropic life for the past 25 years, and will continue to be a stalwart champion for veterans for years to come.


Tom Downs, Veteran and Military Family Recruiting, Capital One

Tom Downs leads the diversity recruiting efforts for military veterans, service members, military spouses, and people with disabilities at Capital One since 2015. He has advanced the needle in Veteran recruiting by educating recruiters and hiring managers to understand military resumes, rank, and how that relates to their roles at Capital One. Additionally, Downs has increased veteran recruiting by developing and executing a concentrated national events strategy to support hiring initiatives. Tom Downs has helped lead efforts for Capital One to be recognized as an employer of choice for Veterans, Military Spouses and People with Disabilities including: “Best for Vets”; “Military Friendly”; “Military Spouse Friendly”; and the “Private Sector Employer of the Year” by Equal Opportunity Publications.

Capital One has partnered with Hiring our Heroes since 2001 and has made it a top priority to hire veterans and military spouses. Hiring Our Heroes (HOH) is an initiative of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation that was launched in 2011 as a nationwide effort to connect veterans, service members, and military spouses with meaningful employment opportunities. To Date, they have helped over 30,000 veterans and military spouses obtain employment through their events, more than 2,000 companies have committed to hire over 700,000 veterans and military spouses as part of their Hiring 500,000 Heroes campaign.


Dan Brillman, Taylor Justice, & Andrew Price, UniteUS

Unite US is an outcome-focused technology company that builds coordinated care networks to connect health and social service providers together. Their goal is to connect communities by helping individuals get access to the care and services they need as quickly as possible. Unite US is a veteran-founded company that works closely with other Military and Veterans organizations. They have also partnered with ServingTogether, affiliated with AmericaServes, to support their efforts to use to use technology to guide veterans, shrive members and their families to the most appropriate services and resources available.

CEO/Co-Founder, Dan Brillman, is a current Major in the United States Air Force and is passionate about helping others and tackling difficult issues. Taylor Justice, Co-Founder and President, was a West Point graduate and Infantry Officer in the US Army. He is often evangelizing the need for collaboration technology within most industries. Co-Founder and Director of Outreach, Andrew Price, is passionate about the military and helping the ones that keep us safe.


Bill Kraus & Steve Newton, Mission BBQ

After opening their doors for business on September 11, 2011, 10 short years after our country changed forever, Mission BBQ founders, Bill Kraus and Steve Newt, wanted to remind everyone what makes our country great; Our Heroes. These founders are two friends with military ties and are passionate about BBQ, patriotic for our country, and believe in running a business with meaning and purpose. Since their opening, they have expanded to over 45 locations throughout the United States.

Bill Kraus and Steve Newt make it a priority to shut down the restaurant every day at noon to make an announcement and play the national anthem. Along with their focus in hiring Military Veterans, they give a significant portion of their profits back to the community and support 200+ local organizations.
